Adrian Lewis: I love being teamed-up with darts ‘Dad’

ADRIAN LEWIS loves being teamed-up with his ‘darting dad’ Phil Taylor in the World Cup but admits fearing Scotland.

Jackpot lines up with The Power for the World Cup that kicks off tomorrow (Thurs) as the English set out for their fourth title in five years.

They face the tricky Spanish in their opening tie on Friday – who knocked them out in 2010 – but Lewis admits the Scots and Dutch are their big rivals.

He said: “The Scots are always extra fired up to beat us. They have the entire country on their side trying to bring us down a peg.

“Gary Anderson knows he will have an entire year of stick from Phil and I if we beat them again. He’s had it in the neck since last year’s final when we beat him and Peter Wright.

“Robert Thornton is also a fiercely patriotic bloke and he will be desperate to win it for Scotland and the Dartan Army.

“Scotland, Holland and Australia are the big rivals. Wales can never be underestimated either. But the World Cup is strange because it always throws up a surprise team like Spain have been the last few years.”

Lewis also admits that he loves partnering his old mentor Taylor – and the father and son-like dynamic has worked wonders for them.

He added: “I really enjoy it to be honest with Phil for England.

“We’ve won it three out of the last four years so we’ve got a good record and we really want to retain the title, obviously.

“It’s a hard dynamic playing as a pair, not wanting to let down your team mate or country. It’s also tough getting into a rhythm to be honest.

“I’m a rhythm player and in the pairs you only throw once out of four visits, its hard to focus. But it’s just something you have to deal with. Then you have Phil telling you to slow down in the background!

“We have a lot of banter with the rest of the countries. Phil always treats me like his son, tells me to put me practice in and I say my back hurts from carrying him for the past four years!

“I feel like the World Cup is gathering bigger status every year. I notice my Twitter followers are starting already to say come on Adrian for England.

“I’d love to be able to inspire the England football team before the Euros. Our hopes are high because we are favourites at the darts.

“I’ve been a bit up and down this year. I made the World Final and made Premier League semi-finals but it’s been too inconsistent. I need to go up a level again but I know I can and will.”

*A new Unicorn Eclipse HD2 dartboard was unveiled yesterday and will be used for the first time in competition at the Betway World Cup.

The key new feature is thinner metal used on the bullseye giving the players even more room to hit it and new, cleaner numbers.
