On 3rd January, while many people were bracing for their return to work after the festive season, Gary Anderson was competing for the world title in front of a packed crowd at the PDC World Darts Championships at Alexandra Palace.
After beating Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor to the prestigious award the previous year, Gary defended his title against Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis, himself a former two-time winner. That pedigree was evident as Adrian mounted a brave fightback in the latter stages of the match.
But, despite a brief hiccup in the maths department, Gary eventually proved too strong. As proud sponsors of ‘The Flying Scotsman’, we were on our feet with the rest of his fans as he confirmed a 7-5 victory with a 170 flourish of a checkout.
Gary put that miscalculation down to faltering eyesight and conceded that he may need to resort to wearing glasses in future, which makes his victory all the more impressive. He then went on to joke that he’d done his back in whilst trying to lift the huge trophy. No doubt he will be checking out our range of prestige estates and 4x4s, should he decide to take it on a victory lap of the country!
It’s looking like Gary will definitely need that extra boot space in the coming months. He’s already had to make a trip to pick up the PDC Player Of The Year award at a lavish ceremony on 21st January. With or without a new pair of glasses, his rivals will clearly have him marked down as the one to watch.
We’ll certainly be behind ‘The Flying Scotsman’ all the way again this year. Given the way he’s playing, it would be no surprise if we’re celebrating a treble top of world championships this time next year!
