Our Car of the Month: Mercedes Benz C-Class

Here at Rix Motors, we're passionate about helping our customers make the best decisions when it comes to choosing their new cars. In our Car of the Month blog, we highlight the best cars on the market, giving you a taste of what to expect and providing updates from the industry.

This month, we’ll be looking at none other than the Mercedes Benz C Class. A widely popular model, this newer version joins a prestigious list of C Classes. Does it live up to its legacy?

Interior

The interior of the Mercedes Benz C Class has been changed significantly and is bigger than its predecessors, making it a luxurious drive. It borrows most of its interior from the current generation S-class, the flagship of Mercedes Benz.

The basic architecture is the same, and the 11.9-inch touch screen is identical, boasting the same amount of intelligent features that make communication while driving much safer, using the “Hey Mercedes” voice-activated function. It’s aesthetically pleasing whether you are sitting in the driver's seat, passenger seat, or in the back.

Comfort

The seats and driving position are as comfortable as you would expect from a high-end car like this. Although it's not quite as roomy as some of its competitors on the market at the moment, this isn’t a major negative factor. It uses high-grade materials for the most part which are satisfying to use.

Driving

The Mercedes Benz C Class is smooth and quiet, even when reaching top speeds on the motorway. Plus, it's easy to navigate around twists and turns, with direct steering. It’s not the most satisfying to shift between gears, but it's fuel-efficient due to its hybrid engine. The long-travel brake pedal can be abrupt but the impressive handling and acceleration make up for this.

Engine

The deal-breaker for us in the C Class is the choice of engines. There’s the C300 petrol with a 2.0-litre engine and the slightly smaller C200 petrol with a 1.5-litre engine. There are also diesel options, the C220d and C300d, both with 2.0-litre engines. These are all mild hybrids which boast a 48-volt battery and integrated starter/generator motor which recoups lost energy to assist the engine when starting and accelerating. There is also the C300e, which is a petrol plug-in hybrid, with an electric range of over 60 miles. This is an innovative and adaptable range of engines.

Price

The amount of choice and add-ins make this car suitable for a range of budgets, but of course, as with any Merc, we aren’t talking cheap. With the petrol C200 starting at £38,785 and the top model C300d AMG Line Premium Plus starting at £52,125, this is typical of the high-grade cars on the market at the moment.

There are options that stray in between these two with different features to suit the price, with Premium Plus adding 19-inch five-double-spoke alloy wheels, a head-up display, a stylish sliding sunroof, and Thermotronic four-zone automatic climate control.

Overview

This is a stylish yet functional car that is perfectly capable of handling both daily commutes or more sporty adventures.
