BMW cars have always been popular with drivers in the UK and the 3 Series is no exception. But how does the newest instalment rank up against the other cars on the market right now? Read on to find out in our BMW 3 series review.
Design
This seventh-generation 3 Series maintains the basic design of many of its past iterations. It’s a sporty vehicle that is stylish and functional, and this new entry retains all of this charm. Having said this, this is a distinct and new addition to the line-up that has a more modern feel.
This is perhaps never truer than in the 300e addition, a plug-in hybrid that helps to reduce fuel bills and road tax with its 37-mile electric power distance. If electric isn’t your thing, don’t worry, as this model comes with an adaptable choice of engines that vary in price. Overall, this is a well-priced car with some impressive specifications.
Interior features
Another distinctively modern feature is the infotainment system. Next to the gear stick, there is a dial which allows easy control over the suite. Satellite navigation, Bluetooth and DAB radio are included as standard and can be accessed via the dial or the 8.8-inch touchscreen. This is useful and easy to figure out with ample features.
The driving position is comfortable, but one letdown is that you have to pay extra for additional lumbar support. There’s less space than the Mercedes Benz C Class, although the BMW is larger in terms of height, offering better headroom.
Performance
In terms of performance, if we take the middle-range 320d’s four-cylinder engine, there are vast improvements from the previous 3 Series. It reaches 62mph in 6.8 seconds, which is seriously impressive. The engine is smooth and starts up with no hesitation, staying quiet for the whole journey. There is no hesitation between gears and the handling precision is excellent, making this more than suitable for speedy motorway journeys.
It turns well for use on winding roads, too. Having said this, though, the 3 Series doesn’t feel reassuring over bumps, not staying in contact with the ground too confidently. For everyday driving and longer hauls, this is unlikely to be an issue but is something to consider if you frequent bumpy roads. This car appeals to driving for pleasure with its flair and outstanding performance on road, but its affordability means it’s a suitable executive car that others may turn to.
Conclusion
Compared to similar vehicles on the market right now, we would certainly recommend the BMW 3 Series. Its price tag is lower than its competitors (starting at just £28,650) but there are additional extras and engines to choose from to ensure it's the right fit for you. It’s easy and fun to drive with all of the comforts of a high-end brand that you would expect without compromising on space. Overall, it’s a consistent all-rounder.
