Should I Buy a Mercedes?

A brief history of the brand

In 1886, Karl Benz created the first internal combustion car engine, which was then used in 1901 for the first Mercedes car.

The creation of the Mercedes brand as we know it today is the result of a collaborative effort between Karl and Bertha Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek.

All work together to bring about technological advances and promote their range of cars to the upper class and the racing circuit.

What price points can you expect?

Nowadays, Mercedes-Benz are incredibly popular in the luxury car category. Whether it’s their range of sedans, SUVs or sports cars, there’s a standard of luxury and comfort that drivers have come to expect from this German brand.

So, how much would it set you back if you wanted a Mercedes?

Well, for a hatchback like the A-Class, the Sport Executive Edition will be retailing for £32,924.99. This vehicle has the standard tech from Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, smartphone integration to the Thermotronic automatic climate control system. This system automatically regulates temperature and airflow separately for the driver and passenger.

On the other end of the spectrum, you can purchase the AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC for £156,365. This car emphasises performance with several packages like the AMG Performance exhaust system, KEYLESS-GO, air suspension system and AMG Track Pace. An expensive vehicle, but it offers drivers a race car experience and spares no expense.

Of course, there are a lot of models available to buy. Mercedes as a brand tends to be at the top end of the market.

The build and performance of the car

There are two things to know when it comes to determining how powerful a Mercedes-Benz vehicle is:

  • If the make has later letters in the name e.g. E-Class, G-Class, S-Class, then it will have a large engine and be more expensive than Mercedes makes with early makes e.g. A-Class

  • Makes with larger numbers will typically mean that the engine will be more powerful

For the all-wheel drive experience, you browse the 4MATIC trim. Mercedes-Benz cars are typically larger than their BMW or Audi rivals, and an all-wheel drive system gives drivers additional support and handling.

If you’re more interested in a performance-focused driving experience, their AMG range should appeal to you.

The Maybach range of cars is meant for drivers who want that high-end luxury feel.
