What are the benefits of a 4x4

Some motorists may think 4x4’s are a bit bulky and not so economical for everyday driving and commuting, however a good 4x4 performs excellently in bad weather conditions, have loads of storage space for family getaways and are pretty good looking too.

At RIX we have a dedicated 4x4 section on our website which you can visit here, where we stock models from Land Rover Discovery for serious offroading to Jaguar F-Pace for more of a suave and stylish drive on the road.

If you’re struggling to decide on whether a 4x4 is right for you, RIX have compiled a list of the benefits.

Off Roading

The main selling point of a 4x4 is the improved traction due to the 4 wheel drive. So if you live in a very remote area or like to go off-roading a lot, the stability this provides on slick surfaces including  snow, mud, gravel, hills, grass, and steep inclines is second to none.

Also, when it comes to uneven terrain, you’ll most likely face a lot of potholes and craters. The traction a 4x4 has will easily overcome these and consequently allows you to reach sometimes inaccessible areas.

Of course all of this is supported by their incredibly powerful engines too.

Safety

A high commanding driver position means hazards are spotted easier such as sudden dips and slopes and other oncoming vehicles. The weight behind the vehicle also adds extra stability in case of collisions.

Space and Storage

If you’re going on a family getaway or are going out into the wilderness for a few days, a 4x4 provides loads of room for supplies or additional passengers. This offers a great advantage of practicality for the driver.

Towing Capabilities

As you would expect with a powerful machine like a 4x4, it has excellent towing abilities with little to no side effects on performance. So if you have a caravan or a trailer you need to attach, you can, and it makes it easier and simpler than hiring out a van. Having the towing ability there can also be a real lifesaver if you ever need to pull out stuck vehicles, and the traction means it won’t slip quite as much either. One of our favourite for towing capabilities is the Land Rover Discovery which can tow up to 3,500kg.

Variety

If you’re not necessarily going to always be taking your car off the beaten track and would like to use it on everyday good old tarmac, then there are 4x2 wheel drives available. A 4x2 can be a better option fuel efficiency wise too.
