What Is A Hatchback Car?

Hatchbacks are one of the best-selling vehicle types in the UK, but what exactly defines a hatchback and why is it so popular? We have put together this guide to answer these questions and more!

The hatchback

The most defining feature of a hatchback is the door at the back that opens upward to provide access to the boot. This boot lid is hinged at the top and incorporates the rear window. This differs from a saloon that has a hinge below the window to open and the boot area is separated in the tail of the car rather than attached to the main body.

There are other types of vehicle that have a hatchback lid, for example SUVs and estates, however these have other defining qualities that categorise them as such, and hatchbacks are generally smaller.

Why are hatchbacks so popular?

Hatchbacks have proven to be a top choice at our used car supermarket in Warrington, and they have a number of advantages that make them so popular. Their defining rear door makes this vehicle type very practical, providing a large boot opening that enables easy access. In many hatchbacks, you can also fold the rear seats down and remove the parcel shelf to create a larger loading space when required, but the seats can simply be returned to the upright position if you are transporting passengers, so they are versatile.

While there are various subcategories of hatchback from subcompact options to family hatches, they are relatively small in comparison to saloons and SUVs and other types of car. This can bring several benefits, including better fuel economy and access to tight parking spaces. Plus, their shape is quite compact with a fairly straight rear that doesn’t stick out dramatically. This generally makes them easier to manoeuvre than other cars, as it is easier to judge where your vehicle ends.

Types of hatchback

As mentioned previously, hatchback is an umbrella term and there are various categories that fall under it, including city cars, superminis, family cars, premium models and hot hatches.

City cars

City cars are the smallest type of hatchback. They have a very straight back end and a compact bonnet which makes them ideal for navigating the narrow streets and tight parking spaces that you might find in a busy city. Examples include the Peugeot 108, the Fiat 500, and the Volkswagen Up!

Superminis

Slightly larger than city cars, supermini hatchbacks are ideal if you are looking for something frugal but capable on high speed roads, with more room for shopping than a city car offers. The Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa are particularly popular options.

Family hatchbacks

The Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus are examples of family hatchbacks which, as the name suggests, offer a more spacious cabin and boot for the whole family and their baggage.

Premium hatchbacks

For a touch more class and luxury, you may want to look at the BMW 1 Series or an Audi A1.

Hot hatches

Hot hatches have a little more power behind them to deliver a more thrilling driving experience. The Mercedes-AMG A35 and the Ford Focus ST are great examples.
