What is the best 4x4 car?

Reliable, spacious and capable of great off-road performance, 4x4s are a popular choice for the adventurous type when looking for a new car. With such a range to choose from though, it can be hard to know which model is right for you. To help you make that decision, we've put together a list of some of the best 4x4s currently available at our 4x4 Centre.

Porsche Cayenne

The Cayenne has earned its reputation as an especially driver-friendly 4x4. Plenty of the traits that the high-performance sports cars Porsche earned its reputation with can be seen in this model, with smooth handling and performance. At higher price points, in particular, it's easy to forget you're driving an SUV. When it comes to off-road driving though, the Cayenne isn't quite as hardy as some of its competitors. For this reason, it can be seen as something of a 'luxury SUV.'

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

When it comes to 4x4s, the Range Rover Sport is about as iconic as it gets. A versatile car that is as comfortable off-road in the mud as it is with family life, the Sport can handle most environments. You may find that it lacks the dynamism of some of the more sporty 4x4 options, but with a comfortable ride and a high-quality interior finish, it's easy to see why Range Rover has become such a popular name among premium SUVs.

BMW X5

The X5 has been a true innovator when it comes to SUVs as one of the first to really capture the 'sports SUV' feel. Since then, there have been many competitors that have followed BMW into this field with their own 4x4 entries, but the X5 remains among the very best. Large and spacious with an exceptionally smooth gearbox, the X5 looks likely to stay a competitor for a long time.

Audi Q7

With seven seats packed into its luxury interior, the Q7 is the ideal choice for anyone who regularly drives around a large family and is the major selling point of the model. In terms of how it drives, the Q7 doesn't stand out next to its competitors but it certainly doesn't fall too far behind either. The Q7 comes in at a competitive price point too when compared to similar 4x4s.

Volvo XC40

While not quite as sporty as some of the other models suggested in this list, the XC40 offers great comfort and is one of the safest 4x4s around. A few things you may want to take note of though, is that the engine tends to sound quite rough, and the gearbox can feel a bit jerky. The XC40 is one of the more affordable options on this list too, offering a lot of comfort and style for its price point.
