Which 4x4 is right for me?

You’re searching for the perfect off road car that’s able to tackle driving in demanding conditions, durable, practical that is value for money. With so many 4x4 options available from manufacturers it’s tough to know which one is right for you. We outline some questions you can ask yourself, and give you some of the best 4x4 options available on the market currently.

Why do you want a 4x4?

Is it for family? Outdoor exploring? Whatever the case may be you need to consider whether the 4x4 capability is right for your lifestyle.

Due to the popular demand of 4x4’s, manufacturers have spotted this and have created models that vary in size, capability and price. Furthermore, there are SUV options that aren’t 4x4’s, but still offer that commanding drivers position, and extra ground clearance with breezy capacity for families.

What do I need to consider when buying a 4x4?

As mentioned before, you need to work out how you plan to use the vehicle. If you’re planning on going off-road, you’ll need a 4x4 with a solid front axle and solid rear axle suspension. This will be perfect for tackling muddy tracks, side angles, deep ruts and huge rocks. Whereas if you’re using it for long distance drives, you’ll need it to be comfortable so you’ll need to be looking for good suspension. And if you’re searching for something for towing, you’ll need a 4x4 with lots of power and torque.

Other things to consider are:

-Your budget
-Size of the boot and general storage space
-Number of seats
-Running costs
-Ease of handling
-Warranties
-Maintenance and repair costs
-Automatic or manual
-Petrol or diesel

Which type of 4x4 is the best for me?

Because there are so many different 4x4s to choose from, you'll have to take your time. It doesn't have to be a chore to make a decision though, which is why we’ve helped by listing the top 3 4x4’s on the market for you to choose from.

Land Rover Discovery

With the ability to comfortably seat 7 persons and the flexibility to go anywhere, this 4x4 delivers ultimate utility. The 2009-2017 Land Rover Discovery is available in S, SE, and HSE trim levels, but there is just one engine to select from. While the V6 diesel isn't the most efficient, it is smooth and powerful, and overall running expenses are typical for large SUVs. This 4X4 sports a new interior, updated front and tail, enhanced electronics, and a refreshed multimedia system as compared to the previous Discovery 3. Land Rover's combination of comfort, poise, and refinement was seductive. When you consider the Discove's big and opulent cabin, it's easy to see why.

Mercedes G Class

Opting for a Mercedes Benz G Class is a great way to stand out from the crowd. While it is very luxurious, it still remains very capable and is classed as more reliable in comparison to the classic Range Rover. The 2010-2018 versions are offered in either a 208bhp 3.0-litre diesel in the G350 CDI, or a 500bhp supercharged 5.4-litre V8 petrol in the G55 AMG. An update in 2012 increased power for the diesel to 211bhp and it was rebadged G350d, while the G55 was replaced with a newer twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 was installed with 537bhp (nearer 563bhp by the end of its run) and renamed G63 AMG.

There are no specific trim levels, but there were ezra options available that you could add to the standard model such as dual-zone climate control, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, rear parking sensors and a Harman Kardon sound system. AMG models add sportier touches, notably the 20in alloys, chrome quad side exhausts, red brake calipers and stainless steel side sills.

The inside is covered in luxurious leather and 2012 models onwards include a large updated infotainment screen mounted higher for easy navigation while driving. The comfort inside combined with the timeless military style on the outside is what sets the G Wagon apart from most 4x4’s.

BMW X5

The BMW X5 is a little more suited to road and motorway driving than off road, you can tell that just from its appearance. Focusing on the 2013-2018 models they have plenty of grip, turn into corners well and are very stable. Another standout feature is its level of comfort and the size of its interior. Passengers can travel in the rear with plenty of legroom and the boot is spacious. Having no loading lip or wheel arch intrusions also helps maximise the boot space. On all models aside from the X5 M and xDrive40e, buyers could also specify having a third row of seats giving even more versatility.

If you want to buy an X5 and handle tough and challenging terrain though, check to see if it comes with the XOffroad pack. This will include four driving modes (xSand, xRocks, xGravel, and xSnow), an electronically controlled locking differential, and underbody protection.
