The fifth generation of the Land Rover Discovery has been updated and re-energised in a way that gives its competitors in the large 4x4 segment, such as the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90, a real run for their money. Updates to the design and features include a smoother, less boxy body shape, a frame made of lighter aluminium and smarter media connectivity and safety technology.

There are petrol and diesel versions of the Land Rover Discovery 5, with the most potent offering 360hp. This seven-seater is evidently sizable so driving it may take some getting used to but once you understand the way it moves, it handles quite well. Where the Discovery really comes into its own though is driver and passenger comfort. Visibility is excellent thanks to a lofty ride height in the front. The middle section provides ample leg and headroom and it is one of the few SUVs in its class to be able to comfortably seat two adults with its tall roofline.

The entry-level Discovery 5 trim provides more equipment as standard than its predecessor, although it gets a whole lot more upmarket at the other end of the spectrum. The top trim level rewards you with luxurious Windsor leather seats and this plush leather is also found on the interior of the doors and along the dash beside polished oak veneer. The model is fitted with the brand’s ‘InControl’ infotainment system operated by either an 8-inch or 10-inch touchscreen depending on the trim you choose, and it can also be controlled by conveniently placed buttons on the steering wheel.
